As a reader, you have to think about the audience and purpose of your writing before you start anything. Considering who is your targeted audience will lead you to what style do you need to write in. Yet, you have to think what sort of writing that will suit your writing's purpose.

Audience is the particular group of readers or viewers that the writer is addressing. Before writing, you may ask yourself who is your writing for and what do you know about your audience so that you can grab their attention toward your writing. Furthermore, there are four types of audience which are yourself, personal friend(s), person(s) who you do not know personally and remote audience. The formality depends on who your audience is, usually yourself and personal friend(s) can be informal, whereas person(s) who you do not know personally and remote audience are likely to be formal.

Somehow your audience will not be a single individual, it may involve different types of readers. This is when we need to consider another issue which is the difference between primary audience and secondary audience. Primary audience is whom your document is primarily intended, whereas secondary audience is other readers who may have the reason to read part or all of your document.  For example, your English teacher is the primary audience of your English exam paper and the head of academic will be the secondary audience of your writing. Moreover, you have to identify your audience through five factors which are age groups, gender, language, income with status, and race with ethnicity.

Purpose is his or her main reason for writing. There is a DEEP reason for writing which are to describe, to entertain, to explain and to persuade. If your writing wish to describe a person or thing, you need to include many details of it. Next, to entertain audience through writing is when you have to make sure your audience enjoy reading it. For example, tell a story to give lessons. Besides, if your writing is providing some facts about a particular subject, your purpose is to explain. Then, if you wish your readers to do something, buy something or believe something, your purpose of writing is to persuade.

With the Rhetorical Triangle approach, we focus on the writer, reader and context. Below is the Rhetorical Triangle:

There are three classic appeals that you should consider when communicating:
A) Ethos = Writer
B) Pathos = Audience
C) Logos = Context

After that, I would like to share one of my experience on writing. In college, my English lecturer gave us a task which is to determine which platform to use to suit that particular writing's purpose. For example, if we want to explain about the process of baking cake, we have to write it in food magazine. Other than that, we also learnt how to write a proper email. For example, there is no 'bro' allowed in emailing to a Dr. or Tan Sri. The email should not be too commanding, it must show the politeness.

Thank you for reading and I hope this will help you in your writing. Have a nice day.
